You or your child may need food allergy testing if either of you have symptoms within minutes to hours after exposure to certain foods. Symptoms may affect your digestion, skin, and/or breathing, and may include:
What does it test for?
The Fusion Healthcare food allergy blood test screens for the following common allergens:
1. Total IgE
Measures the overall level of IgE antibodies in the blood, which can indicate a general allergic tendency.
2. Cod Fish
A common allergen that can cause mild to severe reactions, including hives, swelling, and anaphylaxis.
3. Cow’s Milk
One of the most common food allergies in children, often causing digestive distress, skin reactions, and respiratory issues.
4. Egg White
Egg white proteins can trigger allergic reactions, particularly in children, though some outgrow the allergy over time.
5. Mutton
Less common than other meat allergies but can cause symptoms such as skin rashes, swelling, and difficulty breathing in sensitive individuals.
6. Beef
While rare, beef allergies can cause hives, gastrointestinal discomfort, and, in severe cases, anaphylaxis.
7. Pork
Some people experience allergic reactions to pork, which may be linked to alpha-gal syndrome (a red meat allergy triggered by tick bites).
8. Rabbit
Rabbit meat is an uncommon allergen, but those affected may experience skin irritation, breathing difficulties, or digestive issues.
9. Peanut
One of the most serious and common food allergens, peanuts can trigger severe anaphylactic reactions and require strict avoidance.
10. Hazelnut
A tree nut allergy that can cause severe reactions, including oral allergy syndrome (OAS) and anaphylaxis.
11. Shrimp
Shellfish allergies, including shrimp, can cause intense reactions, often persisting into adulthood.
12. Wheat
Wheat allergies can cause digestive distress, skin rashes, and, in some cases, life-threatening reactions. This is different from celiac disease, which is an autoimmune condition.
Food allergy testing is used to help find out if you or your child has an allergy to a specific food. It is mainly used for people who have had symptoms that could be a food allergy. Testing may also be used to see if allergies have gone away over time
The test
Blood will be obtained by a qualified NHS Nurse in the Fusion Healthcare clinic. To take the blood sample, the nurse will insert a small needle into a vein in your arm. A small amount of blood will be collected into a test tube or vial. You may feel a little sting when the needle goes in or out. The vial will be sent off to the laboratory to be tested.
Results will be sent to you via email within 24-48 hours of having the test.
You will receive results pertaining to the level of IgE antibodies detected when testing for each allergen.
Negative Result: Low or undetectable IgE levels for the tested allergens suggest that an allergy is unlikely.
Positive Result: Elevated IgE levels indicate potential sensitization to an allergen, but further evaluation by an allergist is necessary for a formal diagnosis.
Borderline Result: May require additional testing or an elimination diet to determine clinical relevance.
Preparation for a blood test may vary depending on the type of test. Generally, you may need to fast for 8-12 hours before the test, avoid certain medications, and stay hydrated. Our team will provide specific instructions based on your test.
The turnaround time for blood test results depends on the specific test. Most standard tests are completed within 24-48 hours, while specialized tests may take a bit longer. We will inform you of the expected time frame when you have your test done.
Coverage for blood tests varies depending on your insurance plan. We recommend checking with your insurance provider to understand what tests are covered. Our team can also assist you with any insurance-related queries.
