At Fusion Healthcare, we offer a Premarital screening / Pre-marriage screening blood test to give you and you partner peace of mind for your future.
Marriage is a significant journey filled with love and joy. As couples prepare to embark on this journey together, it’s important to prioritize health—both individually and as partners. One essential, yet often overlooked step is undergoing premarital blood tests for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This proactive approach not only ensures transparency but also helps set the foundation for a healthy and informed future together.
The private pre-marriage screening blood test is a test designed to identify potential health concerns and offer a proactive approach to managing and understanding your health and well-being as well as your partners. Identifying any concerns at this time can help you and your partner to plan and take action together.
The Private Premarital screening blood test tests for:
- Chlamydia
- Syphilis
- Gonorrhoea
- HIV
Chlamydia
Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection passed on through unprotected sex. If left untreated, chlamydia can cause serious health problems. Chlamydia is treated with antibiotics.
Symptoms of Chlamydia include:
Women
- Abnormal vaginal discharge
- Bleeding after sex or between periods
- Burning feeling while peeing
- Pain in the lower abdomen
Men
- Burning and itching around the genitalia
- Pain and swelling of the genitalia
- Burning when you pee
Syphilis
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by bacteria. It can be serious if it’s left untreated or passed on to a baby during pregnancy or childbirth. Syphilis is usually spread by contact between moist skin areas anywhere on or inside the body. This blood test tests for antibodies which are specific to syphilis, this is known as a treponemal. Treponemal antibodies usually remain detectable for life, even after successful treatment, so this blood test is capable of indicating a current of past syphilis infection.
The symptoms of syphilis are often mild and hard to notice. They tend to change over time and may come and go.
Symptoms of syphilis include:
- Small sores on the genitalia, usually painless
- Sores in other areas, including in the mouth or on the lips, hands, or bottom
- A rash on the palms on the hands
- White patches in the mouth
- Swollen glands
- Patchy hair loss on the head
It can take three or more weeks for symptoms of syphilis to appear after you have been infected.
Gonorrhoea
Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection caused by bacteria called Neisseria gonorrhoea or gonococcus. It used to be known as ‘the clap’. Gonorrhoea is passed by unprotected sex.
The bacteria can infect the entrance to the womb (cervix), the tube that passes urine (urethra), the rectum, and less commonly, the throat or eyes. The infection can also be passed from a pregnant woman to her baby. If you’re pregnant and believe you may have gonorrhoea, it is important to get tested and treated before your baby is born. Without treatment, gonorrhoea can cause permanent blindness in a new born baby. Gonorrhoea is not spread by touch or saliva. The bacteria cannot survive outside the human body for long.
HIV and AIDS
HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus which attacks the body’s immune system. If left untreated, HIV can lead to AIDS. As it stands, there is currently no effective cure for the virus, once people contract it, they have it for life. A blood test is considered the most accurate test to detect HIV and can often detect HIV sooner than other types of tests. This test can normally give reliable results from a month after exposure. If you believe you have been exposed to HIV in the last 72 hours please contact your health provider immediately to discuss Post-exposure prophylaxis, an anti-HIV medication.
AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) is the name used to describe a number of potentially life-threatening infections and illnesses that happen when your immune system is severely damaged by the HIV virus. While AIDS cannot be transmitted from one person to another, the HIV virus can.
The results from this test can help you and your partner proceed with your future with peace of mind.
Having a private blood test at Fusion Healthcare means you can expect high quality service and accurate results from and NHS approved laboratory. Identifying these infections and viruses early is paramount for effective treatment and management.
